Hello, I'm quite new to this whole PS2-gaming. Recently bought a PS2 (77004, slim) and wanted to try playing copies.
Well tested with on original - the console works. I looked around at the possibilites and, well, as building in a mod-chip is quite difficult, I was glad, there were easier ways with HDadvance, usbextreme or the Mem-32-usb thing. So I checked on these and took USB extreme (as HD-Extreme doesnt work with slim and the Memory Card memor 32 seemed strange. Well, now as I got Usb extreme, I tried it out. I had several game-copies (Smackdown vs Raw 2011 and 2009, Buffy the V.S.
chaoes bleeds, jurassic the hunted, the simpsons the game and 2 smaller japanese games). Well, I'm using a PAL-Version (Germany) and I'm sure I bought the PAL-Disc. I used a 400 GB external USB-IDE-HDD, a Typhoon 20GB 1.8' HDD-Mp3-player, and a 4 GB USB-Flash-Stick. On the HDD and the Stick, the games were found.
(tried the Dos-command, the windows GUI from hdadvance.com and the disc util 2.0 from this forum for converting.) but when I start one of the games and the screen goes black. (the USB-Stick seems to be working due to it's indication light, but I can't hear the HDD doing something.) (also formatted the HDD several times) I found (after this) on other forums, that USB extreme seems to be crappy and nearly no games work on this, so tell me: Did I buy crap or am I just doing something wrong? As alternative: What option else do I have playing backups without modifying my PS2?
Is the Memor32 worth a try, what about this 'Magic Keys'? And what is Swap magic?
Hope someone could help. Thanks in advance. Well tested with on original - the console works.

So I checked on these and took USB extreme (as HD-Extreme doesnt work with slim and the Memory Card memor 32 seemed strange. The Memor32 usage is strange, as it requires USB connection to a PC for original setup of the Memento boot software. And this use of the PS2 ability to boot from MC is very non-optimal. The non-commercial FMCB implementation of it is much better, and works with any MC (while Memento works only with Memor32 MCs). HDAdvance HDLoader clone game loader for internal HDD of a fat PS2 This does not work with SCPH-77004. USBExtreme USBAdvance clone game loader for external USB-connected HDD This does work with all PS2 models, but is practically worthless due to low game compatibility, and horrible stutters in most games due to low transfer speed.
Well, now as I got Usb extreme, I tried it out. I had several game-copies (Smackdown vs Raw 2011 and 2009, Buffy the V.S. chaoes bleeds, jurassic the hunted, the simpsons the game and 2 smaller japanese games). I'm afraid you did buy crap. My own estimate is that the game compatibility of USBExtreme (same core as USBAdvance) is approximately 30% or less, so less than one game in three can be expected to work at all, and those which do may still work badly. Also, even when the games are compatible and disregarding speed issues, the old device drivers of USBExtreme/USBAdvance are quite primitive and incompatible to many USB drives that work fine with the newer USB drivers used in newer homebrew applications (including game loaders). As alternative: What option else do I have playing backups without modifying my PS2? Is the Memor32 worth a try, what about this 'Magic Keys'?
And what is Swap magic? What you really need is not just a game loader, but rather a generic homebrew boot system, to give you full freedom of choice in what other stuff you use, and only thereafter should you worry about which gameloader to use with it. And then you would have plenty to choose from. This way you could have tried USBAdvance USBExtreme at no charge, simply by using the homebrew stuff to run the USBAdvance elf. Fortunately there are lots of ways to get started, and the best of all is to somehow install FMCB Free MC Boot. This site has an installation service which you can use to let someone else install FMCB on your MC for you, at cost only of postage and packaging both ways. The work and the MC content is free of any charge, provided by our volunteers.
You can easily find them in the first post of one of the 'Sticky' threads in the subforum for FMCB inside the main forum for 'PS2 Homebrew/Dev & Emu' stuff. The main FMCB install will give you all the basic tools you need to gain almost as much control over your PS2 as you would have over a normal computer, and then you can easily add whatever additional homebrew applications you want, such as OPL 'Open PS2 Loader', which has the same ability as USBAdvance/USBExtreme of running games from USB, except that it has a game compatibility of well over 95%.
And OPL also has the ability to use other media such as internal HDD of a fat PS2, or by loading games over LAN from storage on a PC, or any other SMB server. (SMB is the native filesharing protocol of Windows.) That last is the method I mostly use myself with my own unmodded SCPH-77004, where I always boot FMCB with autolaunch of the homebrew manager 'uLaunchELF' (aka: uLE) where I then can use a quicklaunch button I set up in the uLE menu for starting OPL. And when OPL is done initializing (maybe 10 seconds) it presents me with a list of the currently 229 PS2 games I have installed in the OPL fileshare of one of the PCs in my LAN. But if you prefer disc-based backups the standard FMCB installs also include the utility ESR, which gives an unmodded PS2 console the ability to run games as burned DVD-R backups, provided only that you add a special ESR-patch to such an ISO file before burning it to disc. Such a disc can then be used on a console with ESR installed almost as if you had a modchip. And the game compatibility of ESR is even higher than that for OPL, somewhere in the range above 99%.
Best regards: dlanor. Well, as I thought, but you just dropped me a bunch of words I don't know. Could you be a bit precise (and easy) on FMCB, OPL and uLE and maybe a guide, how to install or run that? FMCB, OPL, and uLE are three different homebrew projects who all have this site as their 'development center'. Each of them also has a separate subforum of its own inside the main forum entitled 'PS2 Homebrew/Dev & Emu Scene' and in those separate forums you can find tons of information about them all. FMCB Free MC Boot This is a homebrew boot system for the PS2 which makes a physical modchip unneeded, for gaining homebrew control over the console.
This is what allows all the other homebrew stuff to be used even on an unmodded console. FMCB is installed to memory card, and whenever a console power-on or resets with such a memory card inserted, the console will boot the FMCB boot file, which either shows you an extended menu similar to the original Sony menu but with added homebrew commands, or instead (if you configured it so) allows you to autolaunch some other homebrew program, such as uLaunchELF (this is what I do).
Unfortunately the very latest PS2 model with the very latest BIOS version is not able to use FMCB, because Sony blocked it in that bios version. But all consoles made before July 2008 are guaranteed compatible to FMCB (even those of the latest model). ULE uLaunchELF Always included with normal FMCB installs This is a general purpose homebrew manager, though it started as a simple ELF launcher with a quicklaunch menu.
But nowdays it also includes an extensive file manager for all PS2 storage media, HDD partition manager, Text Editor, FTP server, and several other utilities. I use it as the normal 'desktop' program of my PS2, similar to 'Windows Explorer' on a PC. (Not similar in any details though, obviously. ) OPL Open PS2 Loader Sometimes included with FMCB installs This is a PS2 game loader for all storage media not using physical DVD discs. Currently it supports storage of games and gamesaves on Internal HDD, USB drives, Remote storage via SMB protocol. ESR (not really an acronym) Always included with normal FMCB installs This is a PS2 game loader for DVD-R discs, allowing use of such discs for PS2 games even on unmodded consoles that normally refuse such usage.
But it requires special patching of the ISO files before burning to disc. So backups made for modchips do not work as-is on an unmodded console, but the reverse usually works fine (many modchips will load ESR-patched discs as-is, without ESR driver). As for both FMCB and OPL, they both have separate documentation sections on this site, which you can reach through links duplicated on all forum pages. So just look near the top of any forum page for the two links 'GUIDE: Free MC Boot' and 'GUIDE: Open PS2 Loader'. Unfortunately the guide pages on OPL are quite sparse right now, as the old docs for v0.7 are not valid for v0.8 soon to be released, and the documentation for that version is not yet finished. But the guide pages on FMCB are quite extensive leading on to a multitude of installation tutorials. But before you dive into those massive text collections, let me remind you again that there is a free installation service, for those who find it too hard to do themselves, or who lack something needed to do it.
Best regards: dlanor. @satani: If you do not have the equipment, to install FMCB on your own, there are a few trusted friendly installers registered here, which spread FMCB all over the world. If you're from germany there are a few german boards/forums also, where you can get FMCB installed by some people/user/and-or Team-Members. A few of them are: -ps3-tools.de (only the Team-Members/Admins&Mods install it for their users, so I would say it is somewhat trustworthy, even if you wouldn't/don't know that site. ) -board.guli.com/Gulli-Board - Sony PS1-PS3-Section (koller, tidus, thedeathgamer and some others run a thread for this service there.) -ps2tools4you.de.vu (dedicated FMCB-Board by Tidus2006, but you can find all around Homebrew on PS2 there, too.) According to tut, it is possible to create an image for FMCB with USB extreme, but I somehow don't get it. I now have: PS2LOAD.ELF & the BOOT.ELF from uLaunchELF 4.11 (also tried 4.40, but the same result) I created the SYSTEM.CNF and MSYSTEM.CNF as shown in that post. (except at SYSTEM.CNF, i chose PAL instead of PAL/NTFS, does that matter?) I put the files in CDgenPS2 (v3) and modified the LBA according to these numbers written in the post and created an image I copied / converted the mounted cue/bin either way (tried the Windows USB extreme app or the Dos-app and it sais 'complete', but when i Copy the files to my USB-Stick, nothing seems to be found at my PS2. Am I doing anything wrong? Maybe someone could send me a working Converted file for USB extreme?
Update: Well, now i got at least the point, that my PS sees the stick and can load the File. So now I'm in ELF-Launcher 4.11 (grey screen. Some options), what now? How do I install the FMCB? Last edited by satani; at 12:14 PM. Update: Well, now i got at least the point, that my PS sees the stick and can load the File. So now I'm in ELF-Launcher 4.11 /beginrant/ Really?
Because as far as I know no program by that name exists. The proper name is 'uLaunchELF', though 'LaunchELF' is also acceptable, but no other variations are. The proper abbreviated form is always 'uLE' and nothing else. 'ELF-Launcher' and some other constructions I've seen are not even abbreviations, since they are longer than the original name. (grey screen. Some options), what now? How do I install the FMCB?
At this point what you should do is to open the uLE FileBrowser (by default this is already in the uLE quicklaunch menu), and use it to browse into 'mass:' which is your USB drive. On that drive you should have placed a copy of the entire downloaded 'FMCB noobie package' with the FMCB installer elf, which is what you should then let uLE launch. This should start up the FMCB installer application which you have probably read several tutorials about how to use already. (If not, now would be a good time to do so.
) Naturally you can also add some applications into the INSTALL folder of the package before the installation, if you want something not included with the noobie package you download (they often have HDLoader, but lack OPL). But it is quite simple to add stuff later on too, so this is not really something to worry about. In fact most of what I wrote here is also included (in other forms) in the tutorial you used, as shown by the following quote from it. Now extract the FMCB package. Copy the 'INSTALL' folder and the 'FREEMCBOOT.ELF' to your USB drive.
Unplug the USB drive from your computer and proceed. Installing FMCB to your PS2's memory card For this you will need your USB drive and the PS2 USBeXtreme software. Plug the USB drive into your PS2 and power it on. Insert the USBeXtreme disc (if it's not already in). Once USBeXtreme has loaded, CDLoader should show up in the menu. Press X to open it. Now CDLoader should load.
It will be in Spanish by default. Press O to switch to English (which is not necessary because there's not much we need to do in CDLoader). A menu should show up. Choose uLaunchELF from the menu and press X. Now in uLaunchELF, press O to start browsing.
Select MASS: from the menu and press O. Select FREEMCBOOT.ELF and press O.
Now the FMCB installer should run. Follow the prompts to install onto your memory card. As you can see it is all there, including both the preparation of the FMCB package on the USB drive as well as how to proceed after booting uLE. All that remains is how to proceed inside the FMCB installer, and that is covered by many other tutorials, which you should consult if still unsure about it. Best regards: dlanor.
